Beitrag von: shadowman am Januar 28, 2005, 09:28:28 Nachmittag
Yep, we move on ladies and gentlemen...

"To boldly go where no B4M fan has gone before"

So, our guide about Austria is going to be our beloved Prab, also known as 'the man with the demon eyes'...

So when I think of Austria, I think of :

- Tirol and jodeln (is there an english word for this ?)
- Vienna
- Sachertorte
- Mozart, Strauss
- Herrliche Bergen, sonnige Hôhen (originates from an Austrian song...)
- Salzburg (the rain city)
- Swarowski Chrystal (my wife has collected a small collection of it... if only it wasn't so       damn expensive... :dead: )
- Schwarzenegger
- Niki Lauda

That is all that comes to mind right now.
Guess I will add a bit here and there when you guys join in...

- Mozart

The one and only historic achievement of Austria: "To make Mozart an Austrian and Hitler a German."

Hey, you guys know quite a bit so far :)

Okay, Mozart WAS an Austrian, he was born in Salzburg.
Hitler was Austrian too actually, he was born in Braunau, that's in Upper Austria.

The English word for "jodeln" is actually "to yodel".

For those who don't know "Niki Lauda" - he was a famous Austrian Formula 1 race driver.
He was also founder and head of "Lauda Air" which was a popular airline in Austria (it went bankrupt lately).

Keep on telling what you guys know :)

The Wikipedia writes:

Mozart was born in Salzburg in modern-day Austria, but at the time was the capital of a small independent Archbishopric within the Holy Roman Empire.

Oh, I looked it up now and it says the same indeed.
Around 1756 (Mozarts year of birth) Salzburg was part of the Holy Roman Empire (or Sacrum Romanum Imperium Nationis Germanicae), which means that he was actually German.

Interesting!

Kitzbühel, yeah thats a town in Tyrol, it hostet the winter Olympics in 1976.
It has a lot of nice skiing spots so yeah, a lot of people from abroad come there too :)

But hey, by reading this topic, I know a little more :)

Whenever I think of "Classical" Music, I think of Vienna and Austria

Most people connect Austria, and especially Vienna, with music. Classical music that is.
I even noticed, that they play classical music in the subway stations in the inner city (1st district).

I have to admit that I'm not that familiar with classical stuff, although I'm quite aware of the fact, that it is a huge part of VIennese culture and history.

Still, I love walking around in the city, especially in the first district, for there are a lot of old buildings and narrow small streets paved with paving stone.

The Vienna Boys' Choir is one of the oldest boys' choirs existing in the world

Yes, that's true and they were trained and educated under heavy discipline.
But nowadays everything is a bit easier and not too conservative.

By the way, did you guys know that at the time when Mozart lived, young men didn't come to their breaking of voice until they where in their early twenties?
That's why the boys in the choirs had quite long careers with their singing.
Nowadays they stay in the choir just until the age of thirteen or fourteen, because then their voice starts to become deeper and the change of voice starts.

Vienna’s-Giant Ferris Wheel

I've been on it once.
Quite a nice view over Vienna.
Did you know that some Japanese guys or a company from Japan actually bought it?

St.Stephan’s Cathedral

The famous landmark, right in the center of Vienna.
Our beloved "Stephansdom", which is over 800 years old, and measures 107,2 meters (that is 351,7 feet - which is the lenght of a long subway train here).
Each time I walk past the cathedral I stare in awe for a few moments. Sounds funny I know (and some of my friends ask me too, why I'm staring), but I really like to watch these buildings which are old and huge and  were build by man.
It makes me imagine how the times may have been back then.

Vienna State Opera

Been there once, when I was in elementary school.
I found it boring then. It absolutely isn't the right place for a eight year old :)
But I'm planing to go there and watch an opera soon. If it wasn't so expensive...

The Lipizzaners and the Spanish Riding School in Vienna

A colleague of mine was into riding and horses and worked for a short time at the Spanish Riding School.
She told me about those older riders, who where in charge of the Lipizzaner horses.
They were arrogant, highly paid (about three to four thousand (!) € a month!), totally NOT handsome, and the women loved them. :)

A pic of a rider on a Lipizzaner horse (http://www.kulturreisen-baldham.de/reisen/Festspiele/wien%20spanische%20hofreitschule%20schoenbrunn.JPG)

Zitat
Schoenbrunn Palace

Beautiful residence of the monarchs of Austria. At least it used to be :)
The park infront of the palace is nice!
The Schönbrunn Zoo is the oldest zoo in the world as far as I know.
Haven't been there for quite a long time.

A pic of "Schloss Schönbrunn" with the park infront of it. In the background you can see the St.Stephans Cathedral too (http://www.planet-vienna.com/spots/Schoenbrunn/Schoenbrunn4.jpg)

Zitat
Innsbruck-Golden Roof

I grew up here in Vienna and I've been living here for all my 21 years, but I was actually born in Innsbruck.
Still I have next to NO CLUE about that city. But okay... I don't get out of Vienna actually. But I'm planing to change that! As soon as possible!
But I've heard about that Golden Roof, or "Goldenes Dachl" as we say here :)

I know exactly how you feel.
I did the same on my two trips to Europe, escecially the cathedral at Toledo, Spain.

My god how awesome these buklidings are. My first time to NY City I did the same as well,. How all these things were built truly amazes me.
