Okay, this issue was raised over at the...*shudder* HammerFall forums (for those of you that asked me about the atmosphere of the forums, there is now in-fighting between the mods. But I digress...)
Anyway, I've always considered Falconer as folk/power metal, but other metal fans claim that Falconer is Power, while still others call Falconer Folk metal.
So I guess this is aimed at Stefan or anyone else in Falconer who knows: What do you guys consider yourselves? And no copping out and saying "We're just heavy metal!" All metal bands say that! Because it IS true, but it really doesn't answer the question much. ;) Well, regardless of what you guys consider yourselves, it won't change my opinion. I just was hoping to settle an argument. :)

I would call the first album folk rather than power, but the latest album is more power.
The second album would then be the middleway. That's how I think Falconer's evolved.
So maybe Folk/Power aint such a bad description :)
-
It's simply Power-metal with folk lore elements.
-
I always thought of Falconer as a Heavy Power Metal band. I think there are some folk elements involved, but not so much as to call them Folk Metal.
-

Well... Songs as Per Tyrssons Döttrar I Vänge and We Sold Our Homesteads aren't present on the newest album, so you must agree the band has somewhat evolved away from the folk elements.
-
Guess everyone around here says pretty much the same thing :
Power metal with some folk elements. Personally I would not call it folk metal that is for sure.
And yes Angel of music, it would really interesting to know what the band has to add to this...
-
Ohhhh Stefaaaannnn...we're all eagerly awaiting your two cents. ;)
-
I would call Falconer´s music "Melodic Heavy power metal with a folkish touch and a feeling of atmospheric ambience spiced up with ordinary rock."
Well, what about that!!!
If I call it power metal, it feels like it HAS to be fast
If I call it folk metal it has to be so very "rumpi-dum-dum"
I think we use some of both but also other ingridients.
-

That was short ;)
-
You can always make it even longer (aka "enlarge your band's musical style description NOW" - ha, sounds like some spam, doesn't it?). ;)
Well, what use should it be trying to force a band's style into some drawer? That is one thing so special about FALCONER, I think; no boring following of one certain style/template, but some self-contained mix.
-
*grin* Thanks Stefan.
I like the description of folk: "rumpi-dum-dum"
Odin, I'm not trying to force their style into one category. Everyone knows that even if a band starts out as Nu, they may change their style over time, because that's just what happens. Thus, the style "category" changes too.
Like socks going from the sock drawer to the underwear drawer to party with bras and panties and...wait, I really was going somewhere with that analogy, but I lost it...whoops.

Huh ? Now there is something I never heard about ?
Please take your time and finish that sentence...
:P

I doubt he adressed only you with his statement. I believe it was a general statement.
-
By the way, i was cruising some pages the other day and came across the
genre "battle metal". Can they come up with anything more stupid.
It just sounds too banana to be taken seriously.
-
LOL
BATTLE METAL  :D
-
Hey guys! I found a new genre for Amon Amarth!!! Now we have to call them Melodic black death viking battle metal!! COOL!
-
Well, never mind the creations of genres, but TURISAS did a really nice album there (I guess it was there you read "Battle Metal", because the album is also entitled as that). :)
-
Well the Turisas album turned out quite good I think!
"Battle Metal" as an album title is a whole different story.
But as a description for a music genre *g* I don't know... it sounds stupid :)
-
I did like that album as well, I actually bought it because of a Bleeding review
I agree with Prab here on using it as a label, I really don't care for it. These labels are getting a little confusing. I like the good old days with Thrash, power, and speed, that was it! But I guess as music evolves so does the need to classify it, that is the human way it appears.
-
Yep, I do have mixed feelings about metal 'genres' as well, but admit it : it makes the talking a bit easier right ?
Quite a bit of difference between Power Metal and Grindcore right ?
Reminds me, when I started of there was Hardrock and Heavy Metal...
Aaaah... the simpler times...

As long as your definitions are the same, that is where the question comes in I think. So many bands don't fit one category.

Tex, allow me.......
I thought when you started there was only banging sticks on rocks...... *ducks & runs*
SCNR,
The Metal RN
-
Now look at this! The Metal RN has learnt some really nice picking on Shadowman meanwhile.
-
Aaarrgghh... this is how the plague spread around 1666 I think...
And no damned : even I wasn't born back then smart asses !!!
Metal maiden !! Help me !!!
-
Well, I refer to all fantasy/medieval or othewise non-modern or fictitious forms of metal as Battle Metal. It's something I came up with on my own before I actually heard there was a specific genre called Battle Metal. It's just what I call that kind of stuff (as it comprises most of the kind of music I listen to).
As to Falconer itself. If I were to classify it I would say it's Folk Power Metal. Yeah, sometimes genre names are ridiculous, but I believe that Folk Power Metal is an apt description of what Falconer is. It's power metal most assuredly, with folk elements added in, so it's more of a duality. It doesn't have to be one or the other, it can quite easily be both, so henceforth I refer to it as Folk Power Metal. ;)
-
i dont know what it is..... Folk or Power or Power or Folk or Folkpower PowerFolk,,,,, Falconer Just ROCKS! :bluebanger:
-
 Muahahhahahahha!!!!!!!!
Folk has to do with a country's folklore and power has to do with... POWER!!!
Why don't we ALL let the bands do their best and just bang and enjoy?? Come on you people!!!!!!!

yeah that is true, and there is also a genre called Pagan metal, and then i mean the Black metal version of Pagan metal.
Its so difficult a band to put in a catogory, i dont do that anymore, at my linkpage i made category's named Heavy/Prog/Power Mix, Extreme/Goth/Trash/Black/Death Mix and alternative Mix.
so know i dont have to make worry anymore where to put in a band because i have so enough about the emails with hey Mascha this band is not Death metal but Trash and blablablablabla...........................................................
well if they sound kool then they sound kool and what kind of metal it is that doesnt matter for me.
-

That's the spirit!!! 8)

don't be such geeks! call it ROCK and stop giving the music all sorts of usless faggit names

Turisas are excellent! :banger2:
However Battle Metal is really that good a description I guess of the music. I assume that you might think that the music would be a bit bombastic, then again maybe you would think of power metal being like that too.

Hey that was my quote, why the hell did it come up as guest?
EDIT: also changed my original post slightly as it didn't make sense originally!!
-
So, i've just reregisterred :P
I'm Falconer fan for several years now, i think that the first 2 Albums were the greatest, too.
After hearing it several times i also accustomed me to the new sound of Falconer, especially the new "rough" sounding vocals.
I had the hope that Grime vs Grandeur would sound more linke the old albums, but i was disappointed again :( Perhaps i will like it after hearing it several times, i donn't know.
Perhaps the next album will be more folk than the last 2, at least i hope so.
Sorry if my grammar or spelling isn't correct all the time, bist i didn't write anything in english a long time :)
-
The only thing I can promise so far regarding the next album (which is still far away) is that it will be alot of folk music in it. More than ever as it looks now.
-
Then all "old" Falconer fans should be very lucky :)
We'll stay tuned.

As long as you never forget the heavy aspect of the music then that sounds great!
-
I think they´re power/folk metal... But hwo care i love them xD :bangersmiley: :56:

Genres are silly. But somehow, people seems to be in need of them.
There are new genres popping up with every new band these days.
I stopped (well, I still use the word "metal", "death metal", etc) using the genres when "nu-metal" arrived. Not just because of the silly music, but what happens when nu-metal gets old?
Will new music with a new style be called "nu-metal 2" or "even nuer metal"?
-
Will new music with a new style be called "nu-metal 2" or "even nuer metal"?
No, the new thing is to add "-core" after a pre-existing subgenre. So now you've got "death-core" and all that silly stuff. Nu-metal is still used to describe bands like Korn, System of a Down, Mudvayne, etc..., but it doesn't seem to be used for any newer bands.
-
Blimey! Didn't think of that! But nu-metal is old, then?
-

It seems to be. I think it might still exist as a subgenre, but I'm not really up to date on my nu-metal bands. ;)
