I'm pretty sure I seen this topic on here awhile ago but anyway I searched for it and havent found it so I thought I would start it up again.
What other bands are "similiar" or would be of interest to fans of Falconer/mithotyn. Im gonna try to stay away from more popular bands such as Blind Guardian, Hammerfall, Sonata Arctica, FInntroll, as everyone has heard of them, so please dont list bands like that.
Storyteller - I only have one album, Storyteller, but some of their work is amazing, Must check outs are songs Power Within, the Storyteller, Chant of the Thieves. They are very folk influenced, fans of falconer should really check them out, specially since falconer has a link to them!
Avantasia - This is a power metal super group, the Metal Opera I is ok, but the Metal Opera II is an amazing album, the song the Seven Angels is a must hear, its a truly epic song.
Elvenking - This band has some amazing melodies in their guitar work, Heathenreel is the album, stand out songs are Pagan Purity, Dweller of Rhymes, Oakenshield. If Elves were to make epic power metal, this would be it!
Freternia - I believe they have a few albums out but the one I have is Warchants and Fairytales. Two stand out songs are Dragonsong and Woods of the Elvenking.
Ensiferum - I believe they are becoming more well known but they are an excellent band. I wish I had more than one album of theirs because songs like Eternal Wait and the Battle Song fill my head and I sing them all day.
Falkenbach - One man band who creates epic folk metal, no doubt the best one man band out therre (better and more epic than Bathorys hammerheart) Walhall, the Heathenish Foray, Towards the Halls of Brozen Shields are songs of interest.
Korpiklaani - Go to youtube.com and do a search on this band, their videos are cool and the songs are kick ass, songs like Wooden Pints, Beer Beer, Man Can Go Even Through The Grey Stone.
Wooden Pints
"There's men, underground
Who have never seen the sun
But they really know how to party
The rise their wooden pints and they yoik and sing
And they fight and dance 'till the morning"
Beer Beer
"Beer, beer
I want beer
from beer I get really drunk
Beer, beer
I need more beer
so much I pass out"
They make you wanna drink beer and dance around like little elf/goblin/dwarf beings lol
Einherjer - A lot of you may or may not heard of this band, but is one of the best "viking" folk metal bands out there. With songs like ballad of swords, ODIN OWNS YE ALL, Remember Tokk and Home they are easily one of my favorite bands. I prefer their "softer" folk side than their heavier black metal folk side.
-
Lots of good tips there, mate!
-
Vintersorg and Otyg - Vintersorg is a great folk-singer and one of his projects Otyg is definately worth trying.
Moonsorrow - More finnish metal. Much like Ensiferum.
Mċnegarm - Hard rocking folk, highly recommended
Amon Amarth - Even harder rocking folk
-
I love those bands listed, specially Amon Amarth.
Another one in the vein of Amon Amarth/Moonsorrow is Thyrfing, they do a cover of Over the Hills and Far Away which is badass.
Helheim also might be another to check out if you like the heavier bands like Amon Amarth/Moonsorrow/Manegarm.
If you like Lord of the Rings you have to check out Rivendell, another one man band that makes folk music directly inspired from LotR. Songs to listen to would be the Song of Eldamar and Mithrandir, I believe the song of Eldamar is a poem that was writen by Tolkien.
-
I think one band that is worth mentioning here is Therion, Sweden's second best metal act if you ask me. (megatherion.com) Not the same thing as Falconer, but very folkish and very special.
A little warning to those of you who cannot stand opera, though.
-
Just a small point of contention: Avantasia isn't a band. Avantasia is a project that Tobias Sammet orchestrated. ;) Now that that's out of the way, I'd DEFINITELY agree that everyone should get The Metal Opera I & II. Absolutely brilliant!
Band I would suggest (and I think I've mentioned them before): Heimdall They're excellent, and IMO underrated power metal from Italy.

Ahh, don't you just love mediteranian viking metal?? Just like the Spanish band Runic, shit that's crappy... did you know that there's even a viking band from Chile? Sigh...
-
Really??? O_o that's weird.
-
One band DEFINITELY worth mentioning is Glorious Janitors. they are sadly, extremley hard to find anywhere ( based out of Abbotsford, BC....). The only place i have ever been able to find them is on epic rock radio. There song "Betrayal on the Spanis Main" has been 1st on the requsets for as long as I can remember ( at least a year). In short, Glorious Janitors pwns

Therion is band which may be worth to hear, its not another pseudo black-power metal band. But I guess most ppl already know Therion.
You can get some of their samples on their official site in extras
You might try Nightwish band too. It is some kind of rather not heavy opera metal. Some people like my brother might enjoy it

(The Lord Weird) Slough Feg (http://www.sloughfeg.com)

ahhh thanks for posting, some pretty good stuff there!

Black-power metal? Is that a new genre? I hope it's got nothing to do with blackmetal, because Therion is certainly not in that genre.
-
Yeah, I always considered Therion to be symphonic metal. Well, except for their earliest stuff. Their earliest stuff is death metal, yes?

I think that's the most appropriate expression, yes. A bit like Falconer, yet not.
-
Bands that are considered black-power metal would be children of bodom, norther and kalmah. Only because of their power metalish guitar/keyboard work yet they have a lot of black metal drum work and harsh vocals.
-
Yeah, Therion is just symphonic metal with occasional death metal vocals (some of the music is pretty reminiscent of power metal).
Associating bands like Bodom and Norther with BM will get you crucified by the kvltists.
-
Hahahah! Bewareth thee them occultists!
-
Associating bands like Bodom and Norther with BM will get you crucified by the kvltists.
I'm not a 'kvlt' guy, but I still cringe whenever I see those kind of bands associated with bm.
Won't crucify okkultiis, though. Just because I'm such a nice fellow.
-
Yeah, I know and I'm with ye on the subject. The drums are more to do with melodeath in that sort of band anyway. The vocals in Norther and CoB are Black Metal-styled, but in bands like Kalmah its again more like melodeath. Its just a combination of influences anyway, and its always nice to see bands that can't be shoved into a neat little category.
-
I was not meaning that Therion is "blackpower metal", im just showing my hapiness that Therion isin't another band to bag of black, death or trash metal which I so hate. And yes Therion was some kind of death metal for 2-3 first albums[/quote]
-
Ok! Yes, Therion was quite death metal in the beginning, and the further they get from that genre the better IMO.
Alas, I'm still curious. What is "blackpower metal"? It sounds like a very vile and excentric mixup between Rhapsody and Bathory. ;)
-
Really I guess it would be a crossover between symphonic power metal and symphonic black metal, which aren't actually that far apart to begin with. So it'd be more like a cross between Dimmu and Rhapsody rather than 1349 and Armored Saint.
In fact, here's as good a chance as any for me to plug a local band:
http://www.myspace.com/dionysusuk
Dionysus: Black/Power Metal
-
Well. There seems to be more genres than anyone could ever give any genre names nowadays.
I'll give Dionysus a go!
-

What's wrong with Death Metal? A lot of excellent music lies within the realms of that genre. Even Therion's first two albums remain as the best thing the band has done.
-
Oh yes, the first albums were great! There are a lot great death metal bands out there, even black metal ones (IMO). But (and again I stress that it's my opinion) I think Therion is better now than they/he were/was in the beginning.
-
For those who enjoy acoustical Renaissance folk check out Blackmores Night, which features richie blackmore (Rainbow guitarist, band with Ronnie James Dio for those who dont know)
) and his wife.
-
Blackmore's night is wonderful!
-
Listening to the Curse of Heaven EP, and it came to me that maybe Ravage (http://www.665.org/ravage) is another band that could be of interest to Falconer fans. Very traditional sounding and basically no folk influences, but pretty classy metal with nice leads.
By the way, in case some haven't noticed, I've included a link. Just click on the band's name. This also goes for the previous recommendation.
-
I'm surprised noone have mentioned "Mago de Oz".
A spanish band, a bit folkier than Falconer and singing in Spanish.
Some of their songs are damn good!!
-
I think I've seen some album(s) by "Cruachan" at your place, Stefan. Or have I dreamt that?
-
You have dreamt that, but I have heard them and can see some likeness with Falconer.
-
LOL
Ok, but what the heck was it that I saw then? Hmm. I'll get back to that later when my brains are back to normal (whenever or if that occurs).
-
Maybe it was Blümchen?
-
LOL! Yeah, I saw that on your bed table. Pervert!
-
BLÜMCHEN?
That german teenie techno starlet from the 90s?
Man I remember that time... *g*
-
Blümchen? Stefan, either you have developed a style of irony that is way beyond my comprehension or... I don't know, maybe I just have to redefine my idea of power metal... A LOT.
But seriously - Blümchen? What the hell is up with that?
edit: Come to think of it, I listened to that crap as well when I was like 12 years old or something... but I got rid of it as soon as I came to my senses ^^
-
Ha ha ha!
-
Maybe Stefan has a wide taste of music that includes German Technopop?
-
"Heut ist mein tag" is a classic!!!
A bit too slow though......
-
*Can't help but raise an eyebrow and being lost as whether you people are being facetious or this is for real*
-
Perhaps you guys don't know this, but Stefan is a very famous (locally, anyway) dance dj. He's often at the local pub "Kvarnparken" where he's playing good old stuff like "Technotronics", "Snap!" and "KLF".
-
Ok, now we're taking this unseriousness a bit too far.
-
Yeah, got carried away there! Must be the heat or something. Or perhaps it's just wishes...
-
What's really scary is I was picturing Stefan as a dance dj.
Cool Mo'Stef, bringing you the hottest dance tunes 'till your feet burst into flame!
*points at Black Knight* HIS FAULT!!!

A sad day for fans of old Falconer. :(
-
ROTFLMAO
-
Oh bringing up the DJ thing, my dad who used to play bass for a few bands, was djing for awhile making extra money (mainly playing rock music at weddings and clubs) so he wanted me to come up with a few names. Well being the smart ass I am I came up with DJ Rogain and DJ Bald-spot because he was balding lol. Anyway he went with DJ Traffic Jam sense he always got caught in traffic and ended up always late.
-
Aaaargh hahahahaha, that is awesome, Mindtraveller! L O and fucking L! "Tower of the Dancing Queen" - I can't wait to hear that: Falconer records a techno Abba remix

Question is, will Falconer ´remix some of their old material? What about a dancemania sort of album with good old tracks?
-

I'm praying that was sarcasm.
