Okay, a comment in another thread got me wondering:

What languages does everyone here speak?

I speak English (of course), French (basics, mostly.  I haven't had to use the language in a long time, but I can still be polite and order food. :D) and a small smattering of Swedish.

And when I say small, I mean I can say "good girl" and "Thanks" and "Thank you very much" and "I love you" in Swedish.  That's it, aside from some cuss words.

I remember a similar thread on the old boards, was quite interesting back then as it still is now...
Ok, I am a native Dutch speaking...
Everyone in Belgium is obliged to learn French from the age of 10.
I have the advantage of working in the French speaking part of Belgium so I can say I do not have any problems with French.
When children are at the age of 14 they get English lessons over here.
Euh... well I hope no one is having problems to understand what I am saying in
English...
A the age of 16 I had the choise between additional maths or German...
Nur einmal raten wass ich damals gewählt habe ...
My German is a bit rusty but give me a few days in German company and I am back on the track...
Quite a few years back I started taking evening lessons Spanish and did this for two years.
I realize I haven't spoken Spanish for quite some time now but I believe I would survive on Spanish soil...
In a nutshell : I LOVE FOREIGN LANGUAGES !!!

 :D  :D  :D

In this order: German as my native language, English, which is taught at every school here in Germany on from the 5th grade, since 7th grade Latin, which is not to be spoken, but helpful in learning other languages and especially grammar, and since 9th grade French, which I understand by far better than I speak or write it. I'd love to (and for my study plans almost for sure I'll have to) work on that.

And spain and france under some serious work :P

English is my native language. Beyond that, I speak some German (which seems to actually be improving all the time, may wonders never cease) and a bit of Swiss German. I know a little bit of Swedish and remember some Spanish from when I took it in both Junior High (I was 13 and 14) and again at University (which just repeated what I learned at 13!).

German is my mother tongue, then English like AoP mentioned it. I started French in 7th grade and quit with it after 11th grade because our teachers wrere so horrible and thus I've forgotten most of it - basically I can only understand it if I read it - And since last year I#ve been learning Finnish.
Oh, I can say hello, how are you doing, where are you from in Scots Gaelic.

English and I took Latin in school, as AoP but it does help in picking out words of other languages. When I am done with my current  studies I would lik eto take up a language, my friends at work get me to do soem Swedish and Spanish, but that is very limited and mostly to greetings and medical questions, (ie where does it hurt? ). I also know a limited amount of sign language.

I am horrible at languages! It is not for lack of trying.

I studied French in school starting at age 5.  I can read it and understand what is being said but realy can't speak it.  Later I did 3 years of Latin followed by 3 years of Spanish and Russian. I've retained very little.  Italian  and German was spoken at home but it was used so us children didn't know what the grown-ups were saying so i never was encouraged to learn it. I the 80's I  attempted Japanese. That was comical. I tried to learn Danish and Swedish before visits there but listening to those learning tapes was like pouring sand through a sieve. No retention. Besides, my European friends always want to practise their English with me so it seems I never get to prractise their language. (or I just butchered it SO badly they couldn't stand it.)

I don't know what it is but both my kids really struggled in school with non-native  languages as well. They learned sign language  very easily.  I think that learning ASL utilizes a different part of the brain. Then, it cames full circle, they used it to communicate with each other so I wouldn't know what they were talking about.

I think the Finnish language is pretty neat.  I've noticed alot of softer sounds in it, and alot of uses of "a", "i" and "e" with or without accent marks.  I think it's very flowing and musical, as far as the scandanavian languages go.  Is it really that hard to learn?  :?:

@Virvatuli: AoP is right with that and  learning Finnish is a lot of fun since my Finnish teacher is a really nice woman..

@Odin: Gaelic is kinda hard, at least if you try to teach it yourself.

I'd love to learn Spanish as well.

AngelofMusic, you're right. Finnish is quite neat.. I think it is mainly, broadly said, because of the vocals. In finnish words, there aren't so many consonants as there are in, let's say, german ;)
Great example of finnish's beauty is Nightwish's Lappi from aff.
But also yes, finnish is really difficult.  Example, in german they have only four ****(i'm not sure what it is in english, I think it's "die Fälle" (Kasus?) in german) we have 15...

4. Akkusativ

5. Locativ

Unfortunately, body language is culturally dependent and not universal.
So, signs that mean excellent in German can (and do) mean "Asshole" in another country.

Or, different example: try waving your index and middle finger in England. Be sure to have a weapon ready, as this gesture is extremely offensive.

Believe it or not, in the small area that is Alaska, there are 22 languages and dialects spoken   :hammer:  , coming from 4 different root languages. This was due to a  great deal of clan and tribal isolation.

I speak pretty good English , i believe
and i love the Spanish language , which i speak worse but understand better than Portuguese.
It all comes to Latin i guess..and i studied plenty of that ...Ovidious poeta in terra pontica exulat..blahblahblah
Living in Germany for a month made me learn how to communicate with a six year old, but my tongue is tied up when i try to speak it..hehe..some people said though that my accent was  good - don't try to trap me ..i haven't used the language for over 17 years
