NORTHWIND 9/10
Back on track again with all the right ingredients!
The folk, the epic, the Mathias!
I really feel the bubbling creativity and optimism in the album.
An album consisting of quite simple songs with a commersial touch on both good and bad.
What I think it lacks sometimes is variety and complexity, most good songs follow the same blue prints.
Some stuff are fast just for the sake of being fast again (Spirit of the hawk).
From a lyrical aspect this is over all the best album.
If there are any low points musically I would name them: "Blinded" and "Waltz with the dead"
It would have needed some of the next albums complexity and dramatics.

Fave songs: Catch the shadows, Tower of the queen, Long gone by

Agree totally.

(But not the fave songs part. I miss Perjury and sanctity, Home of the knave and Northwind...aaah!)

I totally agree too, except my fave songs probably are Spirit of the Hawk, Fairyland Fanfare, Himmel Så Trind and Delusion  :bangersmiley:

And, almost forgot, the best bonus cd that any band has ever released!!!

Agree, though I must say that I really can't stand Fairyland fanfare. Sorry, but it is the only Falconer song I do not like. :)

Faves are Long gone by, Catch the Shadow and Legend and the Lore.

Perhaps he means Mathias' version??

In my opinion, Mathias' "Child of the Wild" is superior to the original but mostly in that particula "embrace the untamed see the grandeur under the grime" part. THAT is a display of Mathias' vocal power!
STILL I very much enjoy the overall feel of the original sung by Kriss!
Hey, does ANYBODY here have ANY clue what Kriss is doing these days?!

He´s singing in 2 cover bands. More of party oriented bands but still he seems to makes way more money on singing covers than singing originals.
Being in a cover bands is perfect for him I think, great at impersonating others and the love of being on stage.

Cover bands tend to make good money, I hear.  There's a Maiden cover band in Chicago called Powerslave.  They make more money in a month doing weekend gigs than my boyfriend does at his day job.  I think he should join them, considering one of the band members would kill to have him in it.

It's too bad Kris is only doing cover bands, though.  I am a fan of his voice.  There just aren't enough baritones in metal, IMO.

Gah! I haven't heard that version yet, and it bugs the crap out of me!

I have to admit to being an ignorant Falconer fan....I had no idea they had recorded Child of the Wild with Mathias  :icon_redface:  It can be found on youtube.

I really like the version with Mathias, but in this particular case I have to say that I prefer the original with Kris.

I do too, Cynic.  And I consider myself a Mathias fangirl.  His version of it is quite lovely, but I think Kirs' gritty baritone fits the tone of the music and lyrics better.

That doesn't stop me from listening to both versions obsessively, when I get on a GvG kick. :)

Storm, I think if you ask Stefan nicely, possibly bribe him with alcohol, he might send you the MP3 of the track.  I think.

Then you MUST buy Chapters of a Vale Forlorn. It is probably their best album.

I finally bought it on Itunes (kinda complicated to get it here in Canada) and really appreciated it... For now, I like the last album better. All the songs are pretty good, my favorite one is Delusion :)

I'll check for Chapters of Vale on Itunes... unless I find it somewhere.. I prefer having the real CD in my hands and the booklet.....

N'way, Bonne Année tout le monde! :)

Stefan, seems you know your work well.  I basically agree with your rating of Northwind completely.  9/10, and my favorite songs are also Catch the Shadows, Tower of the Queen, and Long gone By, except I would include Northwind in that list, too.  I'm guessing you also liked it, or someone in Falconer did, seeing you named the album after it! :)   I also liked Home of the Knave a good deal.  Probably my favorite CD ever, tied with *cough, cough* Inhuman Rampage by Dragonforce (oops, did I say that out loud?).  Yes, I'm a DF fan, too, but Northwind is no less amazing by it.  If every album was like Northwind, I would do nothing in life but listen to music.  Only songs I didn't really like were Spirit of the Hawk (which, as you eloquently put it, Stefan, is fast merely for the sake of being fast), and Black Tarn, which was just kind of...eh.  Not just because it's instrumental, just didn't think it had a great melody, but still an awesome CD!  Go Falconer!

First post (be gentle with me  :) )

I kind of agree with most of the album reviews here, first two great and raw; the second two I feel are good metal albums, just doesn't feel like the same band. I feel kind of bad though as I don't seem to like the same songs as other people here - on this album, I don't really like the ballads, my favourites are Waltz with the Dead, Perjury and Sanctity and Fairyland Fanfare.

Maybe because a ballad could be by many bands, they can sound similar irrelevant of the normal style of the band; but the up tempo/heavier tracks show more of Falconer's unique blend of medieval themed metal and Mathias's amazing voice?

Love the start to Northwind though - the first few lines leave you wondering how is this going to end - and then bam! in with the great riff.

This is fast becoming my favourite Falconer album. A very melodic and beautiful album, not just a great piece of metal but a great piece of music. In fact, this is album and Falconer in general have some of the most melodically developed metal I've ever heard, and to me music that manages to weave rich melodies is very good indeed. In that way it reminds me of tendencies in folk music, classical music (especially romantic period), musicals and some of the greatest pop and rock music out there. The bonus tracks and metalized folk songs are great as always! My words are beginning to falter here so I'll just end by thanking Stefan, Mathias, Jimmy, Karsten and Magnus and for making this sublime album.

@ Hasse:
1st: Falconer (just because it's the first I ever heard of them, probably. first impressions last, I guess.)
3rd: ABAT (although some of the songs on this album belong to my top 10 fave songs, but let's not get into that now... :) )

Propably my favourite one. All around awesome. Some people told me that they don't like it because it is to cheesy. Well, I rather take a cheesy album than a boring, progressive album that seems to be mandatory nowadays. The songs are perfect. My favourites would be Northwind, Waltz with the Dead and Legend of the Lore.
I give it a 10 out of 10.
