Or Holland if you like...

Mas will enlighten us about her home country, but in the meanwhile we can all have a little saying about Dutch society and its crazy ways...

Now, being a neighbour of Holland (as every Belgian calls it) I may have some more inside information but don't let this bother you...

Ok, first things that come to mind when I think of Holland are :

My visits to the Efteling, the best amusement park I've ever been to. And yes, I have visited Disneyland Paris...
The Dutch soccer teams are way better than the Belgians ones ( :x  :x  :x ), At least for the moment...
Self assured people !
Tall guys !! And tall women as well !! 8)
Cheese !!!
The paradise for cyclists !
Holland is as flat a billiardcloth...

Mmm... I am sure I will think of more things to add, but why don't you go first...

 :P

- Coffee Shops
- Drug abuse
- Johan Cruyff
- "The Llama" Frank Rijkaard
- Propably the most disappointing national soccer team in the last 10 years: A collection of extremely talented single players obviously don't make a good team
- Queen Beatrice (sp?)
- Maxima, wife of Prince Willem-Alexander; a gourgeous woman
- wind mills
- cheese
- Klogs (sp?)
- "water streets": "Grachten" ?
- Amsterdam, propably the Babylon of the modern age

Amsterdam and magic mushroom-shops :)
Dunno almost anything about the Netherlands, spent like 30 minutes at the Airport of Amsterdam once... Oh, and yes, it's flat, isn't it ;)

Tss... course... how could I forget Cruijff... ?
Imo the best football player this planet has ever seen...
One my earliest tv football matches I remember, the famous WK final of '74...

The netherlands had a genuine dream team back then, now let me see :
Haan, Krol , Neeskens, Cruyff, Rensenbrink...

But HEY ! The Germans came up with a killer 11 as well :
Vogts, Breitner, Beckenbauer, Hoeness, Müller (?) correct me if I'm wrong here German friends..

Mas, thanks for solving so quick, but the "experts" usually wait a few days until they comment on the brainstorming :)

I cut your reply out and will paste it into this thread again in a few days, when (almost) everyone had a chance to write his thoughts, ok?

Sadly all I think of  are  tulips, windmills, the little boy who stuck his finger in the dyke (although I hear this a actually an American myth not one from the Netherlands), wooden shoes, Dutch chocolate...........

For metal music the  awesome  Callenish Circle and Epica.

And last but not least........ The Hague; Capital of South Holland Government, Royal City  of the Netherlands and  home to  the International Court of Justice!

please shadowman will translate? yes please Shadow i am on my knees!  :P  it because its to difficult to write everyting in english.

Holland,

Thanks guys! and now up to tourism on..................?

Aarrgghhh ? Translate ? Why not type a few more pages then ?
Problem is how can I refuse when a woman is on her knees in front of me ?
Ok, so here we go :

"Holland,

In a way this is a really strange country with funny people.
Dutch people may be spontaneous but only up to a certain level, when we are in an elevator noone opens his mouth, when we are at the doctor's in the waiting room noone opens his mouth but when we are watching football and we have to support our football team we all scream : Go Holland, go !
When it is Queens day (note from Shadowman, I believe this is the birthday of the Queen Beatrix, not sure though) we all become crazy, we all dress up, the whole city of Amsterdam is upside down, everyone is dressed in orange, everybody's selling stuff on the street, you can hardly walk straight in the city because of the crowd, there is music everywhere, people act like madmen !

We have a special way of burrying our favorite artists, just recently when André Hazes, a well known crooner passed away well we just rented the whole stadium of Ajax and we let 50 000 people say goodbye, with his coffin in the middle of the field.

Now, a bit about weed, yes it is legal over here to use drugs, but only softdrugs.
Hardrugs are, just as everywhere else prohibited. The only thing to add is that they do not sell alcohol in the so called 'Coffee Shops'  because in combination with the weed this could eally be a hazardous thing. But people just buy it elsewhere and just take the two to a bar where you can smoke and drink at the same time.
There are also bars who follow their own rules and just buy the weed under the counter.

It is also true that Holland is 7 metres below sealevel ; about the what and who I really have no idea but I do know that this is the reason our country consists for a great deal of dunes and ditches.
Driving a car over here is totally no fun at all ! Gasoline costs a fortune, the roadtaxes as well en there are trafficjams everywhere. Only advantage of this is that the highways are nice and very straight but when you have nothing besides traffic jams this is of very little use of course.

Chocolate isn't Dutch, this is the Belgians heritage. We try to copy it but the nicest chocolate is made in Belgium (note from Shadowman : right on Mas !! )
But we do have the nicest cheese, this could hardly be otherwise since the Germans even call us cheeseheads ! But on the other hand, we again are jeaulous of the nice German "Bratwurst" !

Favortite vacation country of the Dutch is France. In masses we move over there each summer. Also Spain, Greece and Turkey are very popular.
Personally I prefer the Scandinavian countries, this year I'm going to Norway ! At this moment there is a project in Norway running which is called 'living and working' in which I 'm very interested. This project is meant for people of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Now it is not just because I live in Holland but Amsterdamis the nicest cityof them all. It is real cozy over here where almost everything is allowed, being gay is accepted nearly everywhere, except by a few assholes. I've visited several cities including Londen, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Antwerp, Athens, Paris and a lot more but Amsterdam just got it all ! I feel the most at ease in my hown town.

Guess this is it for the moment. I found your brainstorming really clever, almost everything you guys said was true ! Oh yeah and the farmers over here do walk in wooden shoes ("klompen"), they even do grocery shopping in 'em.

Thanx guys ! and now up to tourism on................?

Yes, thank you a lot.
I must say, Dutch being nothing but a degenerate German dialect, 99 percent of it can be read quite well by any German who has not much love for his eyes...
so thanks for transforming it into eye-flattering english!

just for the record: im not as much of a dick as my statement might imply.
The degenerate dialect part being purely non-serious, i assure you!

ive got nothing against the dutch.
i like weed!
i will stop now because i write rubbish.

Actually that is because there is a 'dialectal shift' reaching from South to North throughout Europe.
You see, two neighbouring dialects are intelligible for respective speakers of the other one.
Hm, think of this as a chain where each link is an individual dialect.
