Titel: Bleeding just keeps on moving, Tourism - Pt.9: Switserland
Beitrag von: shadowman am Februar 08, 2005, 10:42:30 Nachmittag
Yep guys, the bleeding ship sets sail to Austria's neighbour : Switserland !
As some of you may know our beloved Evilshell is a resident of this wonderful country (it seems the land has never been the same... ) and she has promised to monitor our findings closely and correct us/laugh with us (you pick) when necessary.

So here it goes, Switserland, now let me see. I was on honeymoon in the surroundings of Sion back in 1987 so that is a good start right ?

- Haute Nendaz, wonderful small village where me and my lovely wife have spent numerous... euh... walks among the mountains...
- Chocolate
- Watches
- Lake of Geneva
- Remaing neutral, the highest goal in life for any Swiss. Have to admire them to have kept neutral in almost any European conflict or war...
- A mixture of languages : French, Italian, German and not to forget, Retro Roman
- the highest mountains in Europe

Mmm... not much to start with it seems... Gonna think of some other stuff in the days to come...

Huuh...
My aunt used to live there (but then again, my aunts live everywhere, it seems.. yes, they've taken over the world) so I've visited it.. But it's quite many years ago already.
I can remember that I was really sad because I couldn't go climbing with the others :)
Uhm... only mountains comes to mind at this late moment :)

I've been to Siwitzerland quite a few times.
An uncle of mine lives there, in Biel (Bienne) that is. That's a very small town next to the border to France, in the north-west of Swizerland.

I've been to Zurich too, since another Aunt of mine is living there.
I've visited Bern also.

What comes to my mind is:

- C & C ( Chocolate & Cheese :) )
- Bern Deutsch (the particular type of German they speak there)
- Schweizer Franken (their currency)
- for the german speaking guys here:
"chuchechastli" (spelled wrongly I know, but I tried to meet the pronunciation ;)) which is supposed to mean "küchenkästchen" (kitchen cupboard).
- Fondue (yummy!)
- almost 1000 kilometers from Vienna to Biel. almost a days car ride.
- nice lakes.

that's it for now :)
I add some things I've they come to my mind.

Hm, Switzerland.

1 rifle in every household.
Obligatory service in the Swiss Army for every male older than 18.
Obligatory participation in 1 maneuver per year.
The Swiss Guard - protecting the pope for several centuries already.
Soldiers on bicycles.
One of the first people I got to know on the internet came from there.

The image that always comes to mind is the Matterhorn, I love tolook at mountains, especially since I have always lived in a very flat area of the world.

Cheese and chocolate, just like every other country!!! :D

Well known army
Self armed citizens, and I think low crime
Swiss alps and Swiss passes, through the mountains, alpine meadows
Skiing, winter olympians
Search and rescue dogs, St bernards, I have no idea if they have them, but I think of them!
Foundation of the International Red Cross
Fondue
Basler Leckerli (Basel cookies)
Bertrand Piccard, Jacques Piccard, Auguste Piccard
Team Alinghi makes history by bringing the America's Cup to Europe for the first time in 152 years

I really want to visit here sometime.

Basel is in the northwest of Switzerland, in the three country region with Switzerland, France and Germany (from where I live in Basel, I can walk to France in about 10 minutes and drive to Germany in about the same amount of time). It is very near the Black Forest in Germany, and about an hour's drive from Zurich or Luzerne.

Hey what a coincidence : I can walk to France in 10 minutes as well...
To Germany on the other hand ?
That may take me 100 hours and 10 minutes...

Glad to see you checked in Evilshell ?
Any more comments so far ?
Curious about AOP's remark : one rifle in every household ????

That is a duty given by law. As *every* male citizen has to participate in armed services, they all have to be ready to defend their country at any time - which is only guaranteed when they have their weapons at home.
I hope I didn't mix up anything there but that is what I believe to remember.

Actually, depending on where you are, it isn't so cold in Switzerland! I live in Basel and we get virtually no snow here and it is pretty temperate all year round. Zurich is a slight bit colder, but still fairly temperate year round. And don't forget the Italian south - palm trees and warmerish weather year-round!

@ all - yep, chocolate, cheese, mountains, banks and watches are all very typical Swiss things!

@ Mas - I have never heard of Zwitserse powder cheese or seen it in the grocery stores in Zurich or Basel! In looking it up on google, it seems to be a Dutch thing :)  I'll ask the husband when he gets home.

@ grym - It depends where you are, some places in Switzerland aren't cold at all! I'm in Basel (northwest Switzerland) and we rarely get more than just a dusting of snow and I don't own a proper winter coat - I'm able to get by with a thin leather and a hoodie underneath. The south, on the Italian border, is also pretty warm, particularly in the winter!

@ prab - One of the favorite things the Swiss enjoyed doing when I first moved here was getting me to pronounce several things in Schwyzertüütsch, including "Chäs-Chüechli" (cheesecake, or, more accurately a pseudo-quiche) and "Chuchichäschtli" (kitchen cabinet). Pity for them that I'd prepared myself and even got the guttural "ch" sound down, at least for these two words.

@ AoP - Soldiers on bicycles crack me up. As do the soldiers coming home for break, rifles slung on their back, waiting for their  tram or bus. Sometimes they even just pile them up when there are a few together, half the time nobody even watches to make sure nothing happens to them!

@ Metal RN - The St. Bernards are no longer being used for search & rescue :( I read an article earlier this year that the monks that kept them up at the pass are adopting them out for winters, to be brought back in summer for the tourists to see.

Basel Laeckerli is hard and gross ;)

If you guys ever come around the Basel way, let me know! We can offer some crash space to you two.

More to come..........

@  AoP

I had to clarify the military stuff with my husband, since he's Swiss and a guy.

It has been a big trend over the years for guys to get out of military service, many have not gone through the normal training. Instead they either pay an annual fee (which is what my husband does) or they do civil service.

There is one gun per male (who has completed military service) in the house, up to some time in their 40s. They also keep their ammunition separate and must account for every single piece.

Every house is supposed to also have an air raid shelter, but some (like ours) don't and you have a designated spot in a neighboring building.  They test the air raid sirens yearly, an ear-piercing experience. When we lived in Zurich, they sounded more like giant theramins than air  raid sirens, though.

Anyone else have anything about Switzerland that I can either confirm or deny? :)

I read this with the greatest attention...
Any idea what is the reason that the rest of the world know so little about Switserland ?

Well, why in the world would anybody like to know anything about a country that is neutral in everything?
:)

Is that true?
Honestly, compared to the size of the country and to the additional facts evilshell had to unveil, I think Switzerland is one of the countries we do indeed know a lot about.

Thank you, Shelley. I had supposed something like that (is there any western European country that does not provide a way to avoid military service these days?) but did not know any details. Though I have to admit that situation about air raid shelters was new to me, too.

That is very strange indeed because here in Belgium we have zero information about Switserland, nothing... zilch...
Though I read my newspaper back and forth everyday and quite a lot of magazines on weekly basis (one of the advantages of working in a printing factory  ) there is never anything in it about Switserland ...

I beg forgiveness but I don't see why there would be a reason to be ashamed of anything.

I believe to remember there are about 186 countries out there. How could one know everything or just "a lot" about all or most of them, without being a complete dumbass in everything else?

Personally, I prefer to know something about a lot of things than knowing a lot about few things.
Once there's a reason for it, one can always gather more knowledge and learn more about certain topics.
