I gave my dad a book on biological warfare in the ancient world.

Sometimes History buffs are so easy to shop for. ;)

What? Yesterday was father's day? Uuhh... totally missed that. Well, no problem, never cared much about it anyway - except for the drinking etc. for men who are not fathers yet anyway, hehe. ;)

Odin, you did not miss anything. German father's day is on Ascension day (Christi Himmelfahrt) which takes places 40 days after Easter Sunday. German father's day was on the 5th of May this year.

Ah, I thought so as well. Still not fully "home" again, I guess. %-)

Or that evil sunburn from hell has even MORE impact on my physical as well as psychical constitution than I thought...  :?

Truly sad how people in here forget such a day, which comes once a year to comemorate the man who brought them up in this world or those who fight every day to make sure that their children are well cared for... also goes to show just how (imo. if it bites you then maybe it should and Im not sorry for this) lame and selfish people are to not think about this day... and looking back at the posts i seen more negetive shit and hardly no one saying happy fathers day to any one really.. I mean I know that I am not the only person here who is a father am i... my good lord... can people get any worse..

im sorry but this is about the worst I ahve ever seen in a topic here. and it really makes me mad. because I am a father.. and to see this happen by peers my own age makes me wonder whats going to happen when our children are old enough to give this back to us...

disgust to the max...

Ever thought that some people think about their fathers every day, and tell it to them everyday? No need for fathers day, as there is no actual need for friends day, for that kinda persons.

Did you think about that not every family is a happy one, and that might be another reason for some not to get up screaming"Yey, happy father's day!", and yet, not every family has the joy of a living father.

There (might be) are many reasons, good and bad, don't get angry too quickly :)

i think you overact a little bit. i know children who never visit them father, yeah only they visit them father at fatherday because its fatherday  :? and then you need to visit your father and bring him a present? to be honest that disgust me. o yeah and here in holland fatherday is more for kids in kindergarden, they make someting nice at school for them dad. i think that is more worth it.

i think Virvatulli is right you dont know what the reason is for some people.

Well...while for the most part I feel honoring one's parents is a good idea (as long as they were good parents, or at least did the best they could with the resources they had), it IS just another Hallmark Propaganda day.  Another day for capitalism to cash in on.

And as others have pointed out, some people may have fathers that really don't deserve that title.  I know far too many girls (and a few boys)  whose fathers were abusive, angry, etc...And while sure, these men certainly had their own problems, that doesn't excuse them hurting and/or neglecting their own children.

But methinks the point of this thread was to honor the GOOD fathers, which some of you don't seem to be doing, either.  So let's not bicker and just agree that Father's Day (and every day) is for the men who deserve it.

you know.. my father was never around when I was growing up. he was to busy with his Company to care about is children... does not mean I dont take the day to recollect who my father is.. My father never even knew his father until after he came back from Vietnam and still before and to this day honors his father on this day.. and some one was right to an extent, you can honor your father every day, but that does not mean that their cant be just one special day where you take out some time for an even more rememberance for who your father is or was... not to mention that there are many other fathers out there...... it isnt just a day to honor your own father.. but every man out there with children who they care for and provide for.. but seems that I was out voted.. now I am seeing why i really spend less and less time here on this board....

My father once gave me some good advice:

"Being the strongest, or the most wealthy, or having the most girlfriends does not make one a man.  Doing what it takes when you need to, without hesitation, to help, support, and protect those you love, that is the true mark of a man."

That being said, I believe Father's Day is to honor true men, who do what is neccesary and give up some of their own wants so that their family can enjoy life and prosper.  Anyone with any sense can see that someone who is not a good father should not be honored in Father's Day.  The purpose of the thread was to acknowledge all those who do what needs to be done.  Getting a girl pregnant and having her bear a son does not make someone a father in my opinion.  The father is the one who helps the girl raise the child and treat them both well, in my opinion.  So regardless of who's genes the child carries, if you take a major role in the development of that child, you are just as deserving of a Happy Father's Day as a good father who raises his own offspring.

So really...lose the attitude, there's no need to denounce what is meant as a wishing of blessings to honor great men who do a lot.  Leave your emotional baggage at home.

Simple, those who have criticized the originators of this thread for just trying to show good will towards their friends on the board.  One does not make a thread of celebration in order to insult people, it's quite obvious, so I'm saying those that are taking offense to this thread need to lighten up, and realize that most people don't even know about what's going on in people's personal lives (and would thus not be able to make allowances for such things).  In other words, don't take offense to something if it was not meant to be offensive.  There's no reason to be oversensitive when people are just trying to be kind.

This is annoying.
If you want to tell other people how they're allowed to reply to certain things, there are basically two options:

1. Add an unambiguous description of what is allowed and what is not to the the first posting.
2. Start your own message boards and delete everything that does not fit into your idea of the perfect answer. (Damned... this procedure sounds so familiar. If I only could remember...)

Until then, everyone's free to comment on things the way they feel - unless it's obviously discriminating against someone or something, otherwise insulting (though we even left the insults of a certain person - which were the only insults btw - uncommented in this thread) or there might be legal problems with that answer.

EOT.
