Hahahahaha, well tourism...
On another board I was talking to our nice Virvatuli who is from Finland and it occurred to me how little I know about that country...
In fact, there are so many nationalities represented on the boards I
(and probably many of you ) know nothing about. Cryin' shame really !
Therefor this topic. I suggest we take one country at the time.
Why not start of with Finland...
Virvatuli and Nikos-Hiropol can fill us in after a few stupid  remarks from us all.
Question : if you think about Finland what comes to mind ?
My answer would be : many lakes, a sauna in every house, cold, a language with words with many u's, and euh...Helsinki being the capitol... I am afraid that is all I can tell...
Anyone else before Virvatuli and Nikos-H fill us in ??
If this topic turns out to be a success we can continue with all the countries represented on these boards. Germany, USA, Australia, Sweden, and so on...
-
What an awesome topic Shadow!!!!!! Brilliant!!!!!
I feel that in my limited experience, at festivals and info from a good friend of mine here in the US who is from Sweden, is that they seem to be fun loving, hard drinking, easy going people. I think of saunas as well, and Vodka!! I am curious to know how they felt during the Cold war era, living so close to the at the time USSR. I would love to visit this country proper however to see for myself some day. What do you recommend to experince there??????
-
All that comes to my mind when i think of Finland is Finntroll  And Viikate (Not the band, someone i know on a p2p program)
-
I put a link to this topic on the Falconer board Metal RN, I know there are a few Fins present there, hope they make it over here !
:o
-
I don´t know much of anything about Finland - except for the cliché stuff (lakes, saunas) that were already mentioned.
Beats me, dudes! :flush:
Guess a native Finnish lad will have to educate about this woundrous country!!
-
Hm, I'm honestly looking forward to this topic also...
But what would you think if we'd split it into parts straight away. What I thought of was: Renaming this topic to "Tourism on bleeding.de - Pt1: Finland" or something and continue that for all other countries which are represented on this board.
Because, honestly, I'm afraid the topic might get quite big real soon and handy information might get lost in between dozens of postings.
-
I would add - noisy language and much drinking. And the Finns I've had the pleasure of meeting were multi-lingual. The friends of Pigman from the previous thread were carrying on a conversation with other fans in Spanish, French, Finnish and English all at the same time!
I hope I am not being insulting about the drinking but so many of the Finns I have been exposed to say the same about themselves. And it seems to be a point of pride with many musicians as well that they are heavy drinkers or they were drunk while performing. Seems :insane: to me but I have heard some Finns talk about the fact that they drink because as a people it is the custom not to show emotion and that you have to keep feelings inside or put on a front for other people so as a release they drink.

GOOD IDEA OH MIGHTY THOR !!
DO IT !!
You have my blessing !!

Hahahaha, well Metal Maiden, we have to wait untill a Finn checks in to have this theory confirmed... But to be honest, I do think you have a strong point there...
My father went to Poland back in the early 80's and these are his exact same words ...
Poland - Finland ??
:hm:
-
Just say hip when you want the answers and I'll do my best :)
-
COOL !!
Thanks for joining in Virvatuli !
But please, wait a few days more to enlighten us.
Give a chance to other people to say stupid things  about Finland !
-
@ Shadow - Many from the US during the "cold war" viewed the average Russian as hard drinking as well. Russia = Vodka.
Ops!! Let's stick with Finland here then our new Russian friends can help us with a new thread about their wonderful country!
-
Yeah, in the meanwhile I can always get good laughs by reading this topic ;)
-
Indeed ! That is the whole idea !
But in time we will all get our laugh !!
-
Great topic!
When I think of Finland, I think of a language where even "I love you" sounds like an angry insult, where it is cold, dark and the people are warm and friendly if you can get past the stoic exterior. Quite a bit like Sweden, at least in my mind, except a bit more grey.
-
Thoughts on Finland:
- Very high rate of suicides
- dark and cold
- very technology-friendly
- Linux
-
I am learning Finnish in my leisure time, it's so much fun and my Finnish teacher is a lovely woman, Can't say a lot yet though
Some of my thoughts:
Beautiful countryside
Nightwish
My penpal
Mika Häkkinen / Kimi Räikkönen
-
Finnland... lot of trees and lakes... AND LAPIN KULTA :D
Forgot... MOONSORROW!
-
Well, almost everything I think of has been said already.
Alcohol is expensive (as in Sweden), I think? Maybe being drunk is reserved for wealthy people then?
Grey weather, grey moods, high rates of suicide, SENTENCED (fit perfectly in the drunken suicides thingy ;) ), lakes, forests, cold... humm, we probably only have a limited view into the real Finland there, hehe.
-
Ok ok, we got lots of stuff already ! 8)
I suggest we give it one more day and then Virvatuli could give us some inside views about Finland and the way of life !!
Now only hope Virvatuli is still with us ??
-
Finland?! Hm... Let's se...
The Rasmus? :fuck:
-
Oh c'mon man, this is a piece of cake for you.
Pretty sure you can talk about your neighbouring country for 4 hours straight !!
:lol2:
-
*hih* Omg... so much wonderful stereotypes! ;D And K.Beckman, we can always talk about E-type when this topic comes to sweden ;D
-
So this is it Virvatuli, it is your call, we await anxiously your story on your home country...
So we can all figure out how little  we know about Finland...
Or are you satisfied with our knowledge ???
-
*hih* Omg... so much wonderful stereotypes! ;D And K.Beckman, we can always talk about E-type when this topic comes to sweden ;D
No comment...
Back to Finland: Pamela Anserson, Peer Günt (one of the best hardrock bands ever), Perkele, Helsinki....
-
Kemi
more bands -- Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Children of Bodom, Norther, Battlelore, Entwine, H.I.M., Impaled Nazarene ,Korpiklaani, Poisonblack,Thunderstone
-
BATTLELORE! YESS! oh my god these guys are so good thanks for reminding me. i havent heart "Swords Song" for at least idduno one day or so!
seriously, if theres one thing I thank Finland for, it must be BATTLELORE!!!
np: Tenacious D - Wonderboy
-
Thinking of Finland, Nightwish comes to my mind.
And I'd somehow like to know if this Terva icecream really does exist.
Greetz,
Tex

I have developed a daring theory why none of the Finnish blokes want to write a comprehensive statement about their country.
I believe they do not do it because they dont know what to write about. If a similar topic was to be started about Germany and someome asked me "Hey Sir Birdhead, write us something typical about Germany" id be like "uhm... they already brought the clichés - beer, oktoberfest, evil past, origin of gothic, rammstein, etc - now what am I supposed to write: well i listen to metal, many germans dont, many germans listen to other music and/or crappy music, most go to work, many cant find any, we have men and women, good and bad people...
do you see where im going? my theory is that aside from stereotypes most countries (or lets say western countries in the widest sense) are pretty similar when you go beyond the special characteristics that are already embodied in the clichés!
:hammer:
But this is only what my warped brain mixed together when I was trying desperately to find a solution for this dilemma. poor shadowman must be having a nervous breakdown since noone will inform him about Finland (or Suomi as the Fins call it)...
I am very eager of course to hear alternate theories!!
Or does any of the Fins want to crush my smart-ass theroy by burying us neath a huge heap of information about his country?
Im out!
-
I poor shadowman must be having a nervous breakdown since noone will inform him about Finland (or Suomi as the Fins call it)...
Hold your horses there Horus !
As far as I know there are only a few Fins on this board and that is what makes it the more interesting for us to find out a bit more of Suomi.
Guess the minute we are speaking Virvatuli is preparing a smashing entry about Finland !
And be sure : Germany will be on the list as well.
After all, wouldn't it be interesting to find out what Americans or Australians think about your home country ?
So hush... Don't give it all away yet !!
-
Americans thinking about foreign countries?
I know how that looks like: Epcot (a theme park from World Disney World in Florida)
SCNR,
Tex
-
Sory Horus if I'm too slow... But maybe you understand that I have other life beyond this mighty board ;) Before I left today I did my daily check on this topic ;) and started to write... But I didn't have enough time before school and then my mom got to hospital and now I was just going to start continuing my writing at 10.30 p.m :) There are just so many guestions I have to answer and I want to do it well because Finland ain't nothing like german ;)
-
Okay... So here we go *krhm*
(Why am I the first one to write,? This is awful, sorry if Im being too long)
Shadowman:
True: Many lakes, forrests, and saunas. Cold? Naaah, I wouldn't say, try Alaska.
We have quite much countryside left here. You don't have to drive more than 20 km from Helsinki to whatever direction and puff, you're in the country. You're also right with the finnish vocals... Haluaisitteko käydä leutoa keskustelua asiasta? :fuck:
The Metal RN. Okay, so ofcourse we were afraid of USSR. A bit of Russia-Finnland-Sweden history here to enlighten this... At the early days we were just a part of the big kingdom known Sweden, and later on at 1809 Sweden and Russia got into wars and Russia won... the price was us... Little Finland. Russia gave us our indepentence on 6.12.1917, but only because the WW1st didn't go well for it. Later on at the WW2nd Russia and Finland fought over finlands land and surprise surprise we had to give Russia a lot of our eastern landpieces (east-Karjala). And yeah, we were pretty scared of USSR, because there were and still are some people in Russia that think that the hole Finland belongs to them... (okay, some finns think that Karjala belongs to us, and it actually does....;) ) I remember this one poltician at the 90's who actually demanded war against Finland...
FALSE: Vodka comes from Russia :) but ofcourse is popular also in Finland because of our history... We have our own national pride, wannabevodka Koskenkorva
Metalmaiden: Noisy language? It is beauuuutiful ;)... atleast more beautiful than german ;)
And yeah Metalmaiden you're absolutely righ about the emotion/drinking thing. At my opinion it is because we weren't alowed to tell what we feel, when we belonged to sweden and russia... And the roots of not telling your feelings are soooo long, that there still are quite many people in Finland with that problem. But we're working on it. Nowadays there are more men with emotional problems than women, I'd say.
Evil : Well... There are many opinions about that :) There are a lot of people who actually think that finnish is a really beautiful language... Minä rakastan sinua isn't even the worst sentence by sound ;) Rääkkääkkään is pointed out to be the most ugliest word in finnish ;)
Cold and dark? Remember, we have also summer here ;)
I'd say we have the total opposites of weather here, and I think it as a richness. At midsummer, the sun doesn't even go down, it stays up with us aaaall night long... And well at winter it doesn't weven bother to show up ;) (Here in the south Finnland we have sun from 9 a.m to 3 p.m in midwinter, that's the shortest one)
So dark and cold depends ;) At summertime it is absolutely beautiful and rainy ;D
Thor: Is Linux from us?!!! ;D I only now that the idea of IRC was finnish.... correct me if Im wrong. And I'm most surprised that no-one has said nothing about Nokia yet ;D
Odin: I don't understand that grey weather thing as I have already mentioned, we have also that little thing called sun showing up every now and then ;)
And yes, it is really expensive here. But unlike USA, we dont have so much like THE RICH and THE POOR people... and we don't have homeless people (almost at all)... Everything is so expensive here because of the taxes... But the main reason why people move here is that you can have like 800 euros per month withouth doing any work
Tex: It's quite possible that terva icecream exists, because there is Tervaeverything...
Okay time for our commercials... If you visit finnland you must see our capital Helsinki, there are sooooo much beautiful buildings mostly from the time we were under Russia.. and then there ofcourse is our national pride Suomenlinna ("Finnish castle", Viapori, Sveaborg.... whatever). It was built to protect finnland for attacks from sea, so it's built on this island close to Helsinki. It is really a great place, it is many hundred years old and there are old canoons, an old submarine and ofcourse all those interesting dark caves ;)
http://valokuva.ip-gw.com/suomenlinna/ Some pictures from there...
Then you should also see Lappland (northern part of Finland if someone doesn't know) ofcourse, no matter what the season is, it is gorgeous. There you can see even some shamans  and reindeers... and the real santaclaus ;)
Bad things about Finland... Some say that we are too "USA like", our shopping halls are bigger than needed and everything is supersized... But atleast we still have countryside left ;)
There would be so much to tell about finland, our ancient religion including pacan gods and viking gods but... Well, if you've managed to read this far without falling asleep I give you the credit and wont bore you more :) *thanks and leaves*
-
Oh my god ;D *laughs...* It is quite long... *lol*
-
Thor: Is Linux from us?!!! ;D I only now that the idea of IRC was finnish.... correct me if Im wrong. And I'm most surprised that no-one has said nothing about Nokia yet ;D
Hm, yes and no ;)
The original Linux code, the very first version 0.1 was written by Linus Torvalds who was a swedish speaking student at the Technical University of Helsinki...
Therefore, in a way Linux is from Finland indeed, but the whole thing is of course by far bigger and unites (almost) the whole world in it.
-
Humm, I thought Linus was a Finish student in fact - Swedish speaking you say? Anyway... ;)
Odin: I don't understand that grey weather thing as I have already mentioned, we have also that little thing called sun showing up every now and then

Yeah, I imagined there has to be some summer as well, but somehow I mainly think of grey weather when thinking of Suomi - don't know why, though.
The social system seems to be very good as it is in other Skandinavian countries as far as I know. I guess I should be coming over soon not doing any work. ;)
Thanks for these first impressions, there probably is way more to tell us ignorant people, hehe.
-
Evil : Well... There are many opinions about that :) There are a lot of people who actually think that finnish is a really beautiful language... Minä rakastan sinua isn't even the worst sentence by sound ;) Rääkkääkkään is pointed out to be the most ugliest word in finnish ;)

I think I just think of Scandinavia as cold and dark because I lived near Stockholm from October until January 97 - 98 and all the visits I made were either in winter, early spring or early fall - so I never did get to experience the midnight sun!
I definitely need to get up there and see it for myself!
-
*silently pulls back his lame theory* :flush:
Gee, that IS a rather long essay abewt Suomi! Im astounded!
Well shadowman, now you can die happy, eh?
Youre sure Germany will be up soon? Hm, gotta prepare myself. Hope my theory doesn't apply to myself. Because it is certainly a typical German thing not to be able to tell any typical German things. :|
"Rääkkääkkään"???
Gosh, that is almost as ugly as "Bürobedarfsgeschäft"...
-
I want to add my thanks as well Virvatuli for enlightening us on your native country. Suomi sounds like a wonderful place!
Yeah, I imagined there has to be some summer as well, but somehow I mainly think of grey weather when thinking of Suomi - don't know why, though.
Funny, but I think of two things in conflict with each other when I think of Finland -- Midnight sun and -20 below (that US F not the rest of the worlds' C) temperatures.
-
Well hope you got your answers you wished for :?
And I think there are a lot to tell about german too :) I've visited german many times because I have relatives there, and atleast the wayt hey act there is different from others... so conservative, in my opinion. Well... other lands which would be great to hear about are Belgium, Russia, Israel...
-
Wow that was really cool, thanks for the info and the "commercial section" is a really good idea!!! I would much rather get this from a person than reading it in a book. I am also sort of disappointed in how much we learn about other parts of the world in school. I realized how bad my geography was when the opening ceremonies of the Olympics were on and I would find myself saying, where the heck is that country? Oh well, I guess we will just have to travel some more!!!! :) So.......who's next?
-
A big thanks from me too. Good to hear some stuff about this country besides of the usual travel guide and documentary stuff ;)
But one remark I wanted to add:
And I'm most surprised that no-one has said nothing about Nokia yet ;D
As NOKIA is one of the biggest supporters and promoters of software patents in Europe, thinking of them in a positive way is quite impossible to me... I haven't used NOKIA mobile phones in the past (okay, one, 5 or 6 years ago) and for sure never will if they don't change their opinion.
-

Oh, good to know that. It is time for a new cellular here, and this will help me decide.
Greetz,

I'm surprised that no-one has said nothing about Nokia yet ;D
 I thought Nokia was Swedish ..........and a very socially conscious company. Thanks to everyone for setting me straight.
-
WOHOW !!
Seems like I have a lot to read !
You must excuse me guys but I am sick and with high fever. Gonna have to read everything you responded tomorrow...
Hope I will be feeling better by then to check in again.
Thanks for the info and the effort Virvatuli !!
See you all tomorrow or the day after !
-
Get well soon, ol' Shadow! :drinka:

Get well, Shadow!

What is more, Ive had my first one week vacation from my community service - next day I got sick. Work starts again monday - without me though. Im really pissed I lost my holidays this way. Talk about tough luck!

Thanks for the 'get well words' ! Really appreciate it !! :banger2:
Reaction so far, thanks Virvatuli !
Mmm, I think I already said that yesterday , I must still be hallucinating it seems... :silly:
Oh well, i have learned a great deal about Suomi, if it wasn't that expensive I may have considered taking a holiday over there...
Anyone wants to know a bit more about one of Europes most beatiful countries, this topic will stay online a bit longer (right Odin ? )
And yes : we move on again :
