Ok ! Time to move on !

Eager to learn right ?

Since our good friend The metal RN was so anxious to know what country came next I suggest we do him the honour to continue with his homeland ! The united States of America !

Question remains : when you think about the USA you think about ...

Just one tiny little rule, if I may be so bold, please do not go on about Politics, we may all have our opinion about the foreign policy of the USA and if someone wants to open a topic about that, who am I to forbid that, but in here we are trying to figure out a bit more of the people and the way of life... So...

Boy ! I  sound like a school teacher for cryin' out loud !!
Sorry not the intention but I am sure you catch my drift right ?

So euh... USA ! Where to start ???

Ok, don't shoot me American bleeders, just saying what comes to mind here...

Junk food, many overweight people, BIG country, contradiction : land of the free - national scandal about one naked boob ( ), high criminal rate, Star Trek, Married with Children, Friends, enthousiastic people, big -bigger- biggest...

Gonna keep it limited to this  for the moment since I don't wanna give our American dude too much work in responding to our remarks !!

big, bigger, biggest, yeah. And that's why one or two people can probably not tell us much ab out the whole USA, but maybe the single states they know and/or live in. Way too big and differential country on the whole, I think.

Route 66. :)

Fuel doesn't cost a fortune -> big cars wasting fuel and cruising around. ;)

Now, if you want to go west, I'm not holding you back...

I personally think about Douglas Stevenson.
You probably don't know him.

He was a professor of mine at the university. Very nice guy, very learned, very sick humour. I have learned more of him than from any other professor.
And in more than one way, too. He actually wrote the English-books I used in school!

Unfortunately, he had to return to the states this year, because his wife could not stand the German climate.
Oh well, they now live somewhere in Arizona, so if you ever meet 'em please greet them from me, ok?

Zitat

Boy ! I  sound like a school teacher for cryin' out loud !!

You don't. Believe me, as I have the comparison.

I hope no not-US citizens take this as an invitation to open the fire on you....

PMRC is what comes to my mind. And it wasn't simply a breast, it was a pierced breast. Oh my god! Think about this! A pierced breast!
BTW: the world's largest porn business (production and consumption) is in the states.
Hypocrisy!

Very good point !!
Still we will be getting some info on one specific area then ??

Oh and I forget to mention one strange american phenomenon.
Last night I saw a documentary about the Venice hotel in Las Vegas where they tried to make an excact copy of the city of Venice in Italy, complete with historical buildings, canals and singing gondeliers !

Only one small detail : everything is made out of plastic, cardboard and isomo (hope this is the correct english word?)...
The spokesman said it was a succesfull effort to create the typical 'venice athmosphere' !!
HILARIOUS !! This guy was standing in the middle of a plastic city in the middle of the desert !
Now that is what I call American ! Not one single European would buy that kind of that crap ! Sorry metal RN...

Oh... The Big USA...
I've been there once for 5 weeks and am eager to get back there... despite the fact that the country by itself is a catastrof (12.15 a.m after a few glasses  , dunno how to spell anymore ;) )the people are soooo friendly... atleast the ones I know :) But maybe that's just the way the other world (other than finland;) works.
Central park comes to mind.. and WTC :( And supersized meals... Even I couldn't finish those dishes... BIGBIG people. Skinny models. Superstars. Hollywood. And those stupid, irritating mindless TV shows....The poor&homeless... USA - everything, for good and worse.

Both is true: the highway existed, was renamed and now most of the motels and other business along the road went belly-up. The name of the highway was the only thing that brought tourists intop that part of the US.

a vast side of country and acres of beuty to myself out in the middle of no where, where my nearest neigbor is 40 acres from me, nice people, a american flag in my room and a confederate flag that hangs right next to it because I believe to a point southern style (no I am not rasist my best friend and brother in arms is 7 foot 2 and black).. carpenter jeans, tan leather work boots, nascar tee shirts and my dale earnhardt jr hat on backwards..

well i am origionally from the state of Washington which is in the northwest corner of the continental united states, but have lived in alaska, oregon, california, florida, north carolina ohio and now indiana.

in all the states i have viewed and wittnessed many diferences from one state to the other, but at the same time i see alot of the same things, just sometimes in different manors.. also being a truck driver and an avid motorcyclis I also get to see alot of the country from a personal view and aspect of things. ranging from a wide variety of people, talents, ways of living, culteral atmosphere do to geographical location and such. all in all I see that americans are all about the same in alot of aspects though depending on what part of the country you are from ways of living and values are alot different. no matter where you go in this country you will never escape hatred. though there are places where there are nicer people and such depending on communitees their will never be an end to hatred here. and that is the true miss unfortion of my country you always see me so proud of. if it isnt due to rasicm, it is politicts, power, money, religion, slefishness and uncarring....

all in all though I am very proud of who I am my enviroment and where I stand in life and in this country.. truly I am a country man and all and yes, I do believe in the saying "ride to live and live to ride" its a thing of pride. because their is only three things in this country that makes me feel true freedom. well four but one i dont need to mention lmao.. 1.riding my motor cycle, driving semi truck, and running down the quarter mile as fast as I can make my car run.....

They have this system for numbering highways here and it just sort of happened. That was 1926,  it was named that as an offshoot road of Route 66. They finally remaine it in 2003 Route 491.

Been away for a few days so I haven't  fully digested (no pun intended here) all that was said here but  one thing struck me from  all your comments. ....Yes this is a very vast country so areas are different from each other but I think the image, repeated by most of  BIG, BIGGER , BIGGEST, IS  totally accurate!! America is  oversized everything. "Super sized".  We are unashamed and  unrepenting overconsumers of everything. We're overweight and just plain FAT! From North to South, from sea to shining sea! (And I think, I hope at least,  we are just beginning to understand  the error of our ways.)

I've kind of been waiting to see what everyone said before I chimed in here.

I'm an American expat, born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, spent 12 years (my 20s and early 30s) in the NYC area and moved to Switzerland two years ago.

Yep, americans are overweight. I should know, I'm one of them :) However, the Germans are also overweight, as are the Brits and many French (at least here in the Alsace region). It is a global problem, except that it partially started in the States and its fetish for everything being bigger - including the meal portions.  Bigger is better - but while that is the prevailing attitude and the population size is getting larger by the day, there is still a tremendous amount of discrimination against overweight people. Hell, discrimination against anything and anyone that doesn't fit the "norm". And that is America - a country of dichotomies.

When I think of America, I think of how the country is perceived in the world. There was an article in a local free newspaper yesterday about how the presidential election is more like rock star antics than about politics. That is pretty global for the entire country.

America is a beautiful country. Some of the people are wonderful. But it is a country of extremes. Extreme poverty sitting next to extreme wealth. Extreme intelligence and creativity next to ignorance and illiteracy.

After my last trip back, I described it as being the place of "plastic people in plastic homes with plastic lives". I'm sure that's going to offend a lot of other Americans - but that's how I felt after being away from the country for just over a year (at the time of that visit). Of course, not everyone is like that , but we are talking stereotypes here  - and that was mine :)

Oh - don't get me wrong, I'm not a hater! Although some call me a traitor simply because I left, but that's different. ;)

I may be American by birth, but I've not been American by mind (at least not completely, there are some things which are so undeniably American about me that they hurt! :) ) since I was a teenager.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion - and just because they're different doesn't make them any less valid. I liked seeing what you said about the States - you've given me a view of our country that I can't ever see.

Edited to fix a silly word typo

Splendid description Evilshell.
This is more or less a confirmation of the thoughts I have about tte USA.

I must admit, I' ve never been over the great ocean to visit your -as Ryan says- undeniable beautiful country. Isn't it striking that us Europeans never talk about the richness and the beauty of the country when we talk about America. I pleed guilty as well I'm afraid.

Things in Amerika's recent history  have undoubtably changed the way non US citizens talk about -and look at - America and I am afraid not for the better...

Isn't it so that America displays itself in a twisted way to the rest of the world ? Just look at tv shows, movies etc... So many negative aspects of the American society are repeated constantly, homicide, rape, drugs, organized crime, overpopulated prisons... Believe me, many Europeans are simply afraid to make a trip to the States.

Wouldn't say that. I'd rather say that losts of Europeans don't want to visit a country that unfortunately turns more and more into a police state.
Don't get me wrong, I have absolutely nothing against America or Americans. I have worked for US compainies, met nice US citizens...

But seeing that the DMCA is actually used against people voicing their opinion, seeing that foreigners are photographed and have to leave a fingerprint when crossing the border and that foreigner's information has to be released by flight companies in advance makes me sick. No one gets told where or how long this information is stored, what it is used for and who will get into contact with it.
Coming from a country that once was a totalitarian state (Nazi Germany) and just reunited with a state that was a totalitarian state merely 15 years ago (GDR) this makes me angry.

I'd love to experience the Indian Summer, but I'll never share my personal data without knowing what will happen to it...

Zitat von: "shadowman"

This is undeniably true.

From my perspective, I have seen/felt this. This is an election year for our President to be elected, and there has been so much negative campaigning going around, you can not escape it. What happened on 9/11/2001 was frightening, confusing, and unsettling. What is going on in Iraq and Afghanistan is frightening, confusing and unsettleing. i was really starting to feel anger and sadness for what I felt this country was becoming. The media are constantly focusing on the negative, all you see is what is wrong.

I had a chance to go to my nations capitol in September. i had never been there, and it was awesome. I felt a real surge of patriotism. Here we have wonderful monuments to great leaders in our past, Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, FDR (Roosevelt), and there are memorials to great atrocities (war and the holocaust).  There are numerous museums and exhibits, free to the public that showcase great accomplishments and achievments. It was unbeleivable. I think that when most foreigners visit the USA, they visit New York, but this only serves to perpetuate the stereotype of bigger is better. We are a country of diverse states. I live in the Northeast section of the US, known for its wonderful Autumn foliage color changes. I have been lucky enough to go to Hawaii, the opposite end of the country, ahhhhhh..... paradise. We have the Grand Canyon, the Rocky Mountains, and great national parks such as Yellowstone.

As has been pointed out we are a country of contradiction we have some of the richest rich and the poorest poor. But we are also a very diverse country, we were founded by immigrants from other countries, the melting pot (as I beleive Horus stated 8)  ). we have had a turbulent history. The war for Independence, the Civil war, Civil rights movement. That creates a opportunity for a great exchange of ideas and philosophies, I only hope that we can use it to our advantage and learn from our mistakes, even the ones we make today.

Whatever gave you the idea I was from the midwest?  It couldn't be something over to the left under my user picture, could it?

Well, as an American, when I think if my country I think of fields full of beans and corn, cattle roaming around (hey, they ARE fenced in. :D) and people who LOVE Europeans.  I kid you not.  People in this country are so enchanted by anyone who visits from a foriegn land, especially if you're from Europe.  We're especically crazy for accents.  If you've ever seen Love Actually, you know the scene where Collin gets to the US and the three girls are so amused and enchanted by his accent?  That's not filmmaker fancy, that's seriously how alot of people act when they meet someone from outside of the US.

Just random free association......Baseball, Basketball, Football (not Futbol),  Men's and Women's NCAA B-Ball tournys, LA, NYC, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (though they are missing many talents there!), House of Blues, me, Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed, John Henry, Samuel Clemens, WTC, Sears Tower, Brooklyn Bridge, Coney Island, roller coasters, amusment parks, working a gazillion hours and taking no vacations, beautiful coastline and beaches, never ending flat plains, high mountain peaks, raging rivers, great lakes, people's appreciation of their ancestors heritage/nationality, The Bill of Rights, and Amendments to the Constitution.

The mention of all that food made me very hungry.  Mmm...Nothing beats a corn dog from the State Fair.  OOH!  Except for fried pickles or oreos from the state fair!  Yum, fattening!

Not to mention Apple pie with a nice big chunk of cheddar cheese!!!!!!!  or maybe funnel cakes!!!! I really want some dessert now! :P

I love cheese so much!  OOOH!  And you can get fried cheese curds at the IL State Fair, in addition to the other stuff I mentioned.  Mmm...Dangit, I just had lunch and now I'm hungry again!

Shadow, aren't you married?  You naughty, naughty man!

But it's true, we love Europeans!  Usually.  I've met a few that are as ignorant as some of my fellow countrymen.  I can't stand ignorance.  I had one girl from Slovenia tell me that the US is a horrible place (to keep it short.)  I pointed out that she's never been here, and that all the people from Europe who have been here that I've talked to loved it.  She just told me I was brainwashed.  ERGH.  Needless to say, I don't discuss my country with her anymore.  /rant

And now I must go work on my Ethics crib sheet,  for if I do not, I will do very badly on the test this coming Tuesday.

I really dont understand that accentthing. Atleast most of finnish people sound horrible, like potatos trying to mumble with too many rrr's and k's, while they're desperiately trying to speak something called english. And Russians with nj's... Ynh... Perhaprs its just easier for US people, if they dont understand what their partner is saying?

Ok, cut the crap shadowman !

Just today I read this in the newspaper under the heading 'through or false' :

"Americans aren't really interested in travelling..."

"True, or the destination should be Disneyworld because 70¨% of the Americans have been there. Less than 20 % of the US Citizens own a passport. The reason for this lack of interest on travelling :
- 51 % is afraid
- 26 just don't feel like travelling
- 6 % first would like to see America itself
- 7 % doens't like to fligh
The people who do like to travel have Europe as destination number 1 with a preference of Great-Britain followed by France then Germany"

This article was a side note on the coming US elections in one of Belgians leading newspapers, therefor I can assure you, the sources of this enquiry are 100 % reliable...

Any comments by the American bleeding guys ??

I am suprised that the percent of   "Want to see America first"  is so small!  Because that is most often the excuse I hear from people.

In general Americans are workaholics.  Many take no vacations at all. They pride themselvess on that fact! So if they do take time off its usually to see family or because it is a  holiday.
Most Americans only get a week or  maybe two a year of vacation time, not much time for European travel. Unless you are a college student backpacking through Europe one summer
break,  a  trip to Europe is often seen as a once in a life time thing they save up for to do later in life.

As  far as afraid...well American always seem to be afraid. I lived for a time in an a  large city.  My family was afraid to visit, worried they'd get shot or some such thing. Now when
I go back to visit friends are like "oooh, aren't you scared?" of what? "It's  ssooo dangerous"  ??? I guess looking at the evening news it can look  that way and that is probably the same place
they  get the impression that Europe is sooo dangerous. Watching the news it looks that way. And it is partly due to the fact that  we don't  know geograph!, If something is happening in
the  Ukraine well that's right next to Belgium isn't it???

I would have though that the reason more was that they do not have the time. As stated so many people do not take more than 1 weeks vacation at a time. I also agree with the fear of flying and the wanting to see america. We have been fortunate enough to go to europe the past two years and it has by far excedded any of my expectations. They have been two of the best experiences of my life, along with Hawaii            But I think that has a lot to do with my travel companion :D . Anyway, i know that we can not wait to get back over there to see and learn more, that is the most facinating part. It is all real, and that can be fun, exploring and seeing tjings that you had only seen in a book up till that point. I have always wanted to see the pyramids but i think that we might have to wait awhile before heading to that part of the world

@Joachim, the screenshot in the link  seems genuine ! Funny but  sad at the same time...

@the metal RN, wouldn't keep my expectations about the pyramids that high dude.
Egypt has become a rather popular destination for Belgians lately, and I know some people who were there (including my sister) and they are not all that impressed.

Especially the big commerce around the site is a reason never to go again.
The Egyptians around the pyramids are close to agressive if you do not ride a camel, buy a souvenir, have dinner at the premises... etc...
And above all : it is expensive like hell !!

First off I wanted to welcome AngelOFMusic to the site and the topic. I dont believe that I have ever had the opportunity to say hello to you before.. from the corn and soy bean fields are ya??? what state is that.. Indiana here.....

its been a rough few days for me.. fighting like cats and dogs with my other half (about to give up and send her home back to Cali) and been working 20 hour days because of the funky weather us Corn and Bean haulers and farmers are afraid of the coming freeze.. and well even though I just haul from the fields to the grain elevators it is scary even fro me being a truck driver... i really like driving local instead of being all over the country and never seeing home... and what is this about cattle prods btw lmao... getten kinky while i was away are we :-P.........

one more thing I wanted to add to this topic.. there is nothing better then waking up first light (this time of the year around 6 a.m but i am up at 4 a.m) and walking out of your front door to look at the fields and being able to inhale the fresh smell of cropped fields ie; corn and soy beans and be able to enjoy each breath with out the smell of cars nasty plants that use chemicals that put poisens into our air, no smog, just fresh crisp clean air.. I wouldnt rade it for nothing in the world.. call me your local red neck and I will tell you that your right.. but i do have alot of compassion for things in this world, not to mention I am a hopeless romantic......

@ Shadowman.... did you fall and bump your head.... sexy voice eh.. HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
get over your self "OLD" man  :P

I think that pretty much sums it up. There seems to be a need lately (and I do not mean this particular writer, just in general) to make a point of pointing out differences here lately and making sure that you are on "one side or the other", absolutely frustrating.  :x   It is a funny quote/observation though!!!
