I must say, Dutch being nothing but a degenerate German dialect, 99 percent of it can be read quite well by any German who has not much love for his eyes...

Actually that is because there is a 'dialectal shift' reaching from South to North throughout Europe.
You see, two neighbouring dialects are intelligible for respective speakers of the other one.
Hm, think of this as a chain where each link is an individual dialect.
