np: Dream Theater - Take the time
Btw: still the Images and words album is the best DT album ever in my oppinion. I know that most people like metropolis pt II - scenes from a memory best. Well, me not .
NP: Dream Theater - Scarred.
IMO: I think that Awake and Octavarium are there two best albums, with Awake being on top of the two favorites. I like the progresive metal and different variations of music that Awake displays and the reversable talent that they show in Octavarium, all in all making both albums a success imo.
as far as I&A goes, the first song that I heard came from this album, pull me under, which now im listening too, the album its self is very intellegent and as an indiviual album, was the gretest thing to have happened to the band with the coming of James LaBrie. We all know that Charlie Dominici definatly wasnt it for the band...
I have to agree, that awakeis also a very strong release of DT and one of my favourites. About octavarium my oppionon is splitted. Especially the title track has a great development, rising just to a furious final and ending on the same tone as the first song begins.
But there are some tracks I do not like that much, beacuse they are imo so straight and thus "not DT-like"...
In which I will have to agree with . there are a couple of songs that I feel are straight as well. but for Dream Theater to be able to express a song in that manor without going through all there dilerously amazing riffs and progressive rises is also a treat for me because I find that they are truely able to make a great song in straight times without getting bored. but Awake for me is the ultimate.
what is your ultimate album?
NP: Dream Theater - These Walls \m/
Hm, well for making an "ultimate" rating I think I do not know awake well enough (which has in fact to be changed). But from those DT CDs I know pretty well Images and Words is my absolute favourite, not at last because of the in my oppinion emotional very strong songs of "wait for sleep". And some songs, like "Metropolis Pt I" and "Under a Glass Moon", have nice changes between speeds and rhythms. And in some way most of the songs just touch me. I dont know why, but they do.
Edit: np: DT - Wait for sleep
nice.. most people who like dream theater dont really care for the older dream theater.. mainly because it was concidered more from the 80s "butt rock" era as most people i know refer to it.. I mean dont get me wrong.. I know many who love the older material that dream theater recorded. and personally i like much better then most of their new material.. but it seems that dream theaters fan base is so far spread in age that there is always controversy for the poor band on which direction to go from album to album.. because they are a band who has always tried to please the fans with the music being of the mold of the fans through their hearts and ability to write music, thus the creation of met. PT.2, 6 degrees and ToT, but after all the years of writting thoughs albums and the arguements between the people of different ages they wrote 8v (octavarium) as a way to show there inspiration for their own talents and love for music. finally said hey its time to stop pleasing you because we cant do that and time to start being happy again..
it really is amazing to see that such a band as Dream Theater has managed to stay together as long as they have due to the fan base control.. hate to say it as I do but truely they have let the fans lead their direction for some years now...... but none the less I will support them through anything they write and go through and will love them for who they are.. the greatest prog metal/rock band in the world....
Those are true words you wrote...well, and dont get me too wrong. 8v is a nice piece which one should have. It must was somehow surprising to get such an album from a Band like DT. Well, ok, ToT went already in that direction, being much less complex and much more straight than 6° and Metr Pt II, but nethertheless 8v was somehow surorising for me.
There is beatuiful music on it. And I am not upset with DT as they are grown ups who can do whatever they want. But when I want to hear songs like "I walk beside you" I could as well listten to Coldplay or Muse - which are cool band either. And thus 8v is not my favourite among DT as it is not hte music I expect or want to hear when thinking of them.
Edit: np: Michael Koch - Das Opfer
hehehe..That makes me laugh to hear you say that when you want to listen to "I walk beside you" you could listen to coldplay and muse and get the same thing.. not that the comparison is a bad thing. but I ahve heard simular comments about that very thing...
for me to hear 8v is like watching a child grow up into there way of life, to see such a band go through so many steps and changes in life to where they are now, more of the lighter rock, almost relaxing styles such as marillion and earlier softer fates warning shows to me that they are setting them selfs for all aspects of music. to me it is them finally writting what they want to, so instead of all different styles of music on one album, they show a lil heavy flash with The root of all evil and panic attack, but for the most part the album takes the course of a light melodic pop style, which for a band like dt to me is an awsome step, not only in there ability to display there maturity, but disapline as well. as like ToT where they went all out and just got heavy with the exception of one song.
but you know me I have been a faithful fan for 14 years now of dream theaters and will always stay that way..
