Dark Tranquility is maybe the best melodic death metal band. You should definatelly check them out. Especially their last album Damage Done is worth listening....

NP Dokken - Standing in the shadows

A song from the album 'Back for the Attack'.

Dokken has been quite productive and I admit there is some really commercial shit among their recordings but this album KICKS ASS...

I remember me buying their debut (breaking the chains) back in pfff.. 82 - 83  I guess.
The opening song of that album 'Paris is burning' was for sure my  favorite song of  that forsaken year.
Must have played it like a hundred times in a row on my ol' vinyl player my father bought me for my fifteenth birthday.
Guess the poor man thought I was going to play nothing but Boney M on it !

Well, wherever there's "death" included you'd usually better not expect anything soft and gentle. Even the melodic stuff is rough and hard, but what makes the difference between the melodic stuff and the rest is indeed the melody. Some of those bands do have excellent song writers who are perfectly able to combine melody and aggression.
