I need to share the same thoughts with grym. I know very very little of Austria, except for some German - Austria related history.
But hey, by reading this topic, I know a little more :)

Let's see.....

Whenever I think of "Classical" Music, I think of Vienna and Austria, many composers have already been mentioned. My favorite is Liszt (Liszt's birthplace of Doborjan, Hungary is now known as Raiding, Austria)
The Vienna Boys' Choir is one of the oldest boys' choirs existing in the world
Vienna’s-Giant Ferris Wheel,  St.Stephan’s Cathedral, “Goldener Saal“ (Golden Hall)   Musikverein, Vienna State Opera
The Lipizzaners and the Spanish Riding School in Vienna
City of Salzburg-fortress Hohensalzburg
Schoenbrunn Palace
Innsbruck-Golden Roof
Klapotetz
Brucknerhaus
Very good winter Olympians, hosted twice

Hahahaha... I could be mistaken too but I thought Papua New Guinea is one of Australia's closest neighbours.
Have to take that up with Grym.

See Shadow is just proving how little he know about the area!!!
though I am not sure myself. We looked into going to an Island called Palau for a vacation and I seem to think it is near there somewhere as well, but alas I am not sure, all I know is that it is a long a$$ plane ride!

Whenever I think of "Classical" Music, I think of Vienna and Austria

Most people connect Austria, and especially Vienna, with music. Classical music that is.
I even noticed, that they play classical music in the subway stations in the inner city (1st district).

I have to admit that I'm not that familiar with classical stuff, although I'm quite aware of the fact, that it is a huge part of VIennese culture and history.

Still, I love walking around in the city, especially in the first district, for there are a lot of old buildings and narrow small streets paved with paving stone.

The Vienna Boys' Choir is one of the oldest boys' choirs existing in the world

Yes, that's true and they were trained and educated under heavy discipline.
But nowadays everything is a bit easier and not too conservative.

By the way, did you guys know that at the time when Mozart lived, young men didn't come to their breaking of voice until they where in their early twenties?
That's why the boys in the choirs had quite long careers with their singing.
Nowadays they stay in the choir just until the age of thirteen or fourteen, because then their voice starts to become deeper and the change of voice starts.

Zitat
Vienna’s-Giant Ferris Wheel

I've been on it once.
Quite a nice view over Vienna.
Did you know that some Japanese guys or a company from Japan actually bought it?

Das Wiener Riesenrad

Zitat
St.Stephan’s Cathedral

The famous landmark, right in the center of Vienna.
Our beloved "Stephansdom", which is over 800 years old, and measures 107,2 meters (that is 351,7 feet - which is the lenght of a long subway train here).
Each time I walk past the cathedral I stare in awe for a few moments. Sounds funny I know (and some of my friends ask me too, why I'm staring), but I really like to watch these buildings which are old and huge and  were build by man.
It makes me imagine how the times may have been back then.

Zitat
Vienna State Opera

Been there once, when I was in elementary school.
I found it boring then. It absolutely isn't the right place for a eight year old :)
But I'm planing to go there and watch an opera soon. If it wasn't so expensive...

Zitat
The Lipizzaners and the Spanish Riding School in Vienna

A colleague of mine was into riding and horses and worked for a short time at the Spanish Riding School.
She told me about those older riders, who where in charge of the Lipizzaner horses.
They were arrogant, highly paid (about three to four thousand (!) € a month!), totally NOT handsome, and the women loved them. :)

A pic of a rider on a Lipizzaner horse

Zitat
Schoenbrunn Palace

Beautiful residence of the monarchs of Austria. At least it used to be :)
The park infront of the palace is nice!
The Schönbrunn Zoo is the oldest zoo in the world as far as I know.
Haven't been there for quite a long time.

A pic of "Schloss Schönbrunn" with the park infront of it. In the background you can see the St.Stephans Cathedral too

Zitat
Innsbruck-Golden Roof

I grew up here in Vienna and I've been living here for all my 21 years, but I was actually born in Innsbruck.
Still I have next to NO CLUE about that city. But okay... I don't get out of Vienna actually. But I'm planing to change that! As soon as possible!
But I've heard about that Golden Roof, or "Goldenes Dachl" as we say here :)

I know exactly how you feel.
I did the same on my two trips to Europe, escecially the cathedral at Toledo, Spain.

My god how awesome these buklidings are. My first time to NY City I did the same as well,. How all these things were built truly amazes me.

You made it a work of honour to guide us around !
Sure many of us have learned quite a bit...

Was just wondering if you may have anything to add where none of us have talked about ?
